Museum Branding - Applications of Branding on building.

Once a logo, colour system had been realised I began creating high quality mock ups that showcase the logo in place, These demonstrate the logos ability to be recreated a large and small scale. As well as how it fits within the building itself. Overall these logos are perfect examples of the impact of a logo, it can be used with or without the supporting text and the communication is clear.

Museum Branding - Way finding & Symbols

Once again based on a few simple shapes I have created a number of way-finding implements. This shows the expansion from the typeface, allowing for a link to the overall branding. These will make up the rest of the identities way-finding and signage.

Museum Branding - Pattern Design

An area of graphic design that really interests me is expansion of a simple brand, this can be in many forms here I have expanded the typographic shapes that make up the primary typeface into pattern designs these can be used in many ways, in fabrics, in the covers of books making up wall graphics and any other applications that could be necessary.

The colours admittedly are a bit rash and in your face but the idea is simple these patterns can be used in so many different ways, this expansion of a graphic system is what sets identities and branding apart. The next task would be to utilise these graphic systems.

Magazine Redesign - testing other cover designs

Once the over design layout had been realised, I began creating a number of other cover to show how the redesign would progress. This use of a square format and space for the cover allows consistency through the design but variation through different colour systems. This is informed by the Domus magazine covers where by each issue has a standard colour for the cover.

The issue above is for the 'Rethinking the Rural' design, utilising the same layout structure. I have used an olive green for the primary colour this connects to the rural theme.

This 'Modern living' issue uses a really nice image of Luis Barragan's architectural work. The same structure has again been used to show the consistency and also how yeah would change from issue to issue.

This whole redesign shows how the structures for layouts must be flexible yet consistent to make sure it is clear what it is they are reading but keep it exciting to make sure they are challenged.

Magazine Redesign - Refining spreads for print

In a recent convocation with Holly Catford a designer for Esterson Associates who has been designing for Pit magazine, Eye Magazine and recently History Today. I asked if she knew any high quality (reasonably priced) printers and she suggested ripe digital showing a mock up of Pit Magazine she had printed there. The quality was great and they did good deals for students. So I began contacting Ripe about the print run.

I initially called and asked if they would be able to get it done within my tight deadline.

This then followed onto some convocations about paper, printing and formatting. I decided a Matt finish would best suit the magazines design style. As well as the overall classy/contemporary design aesthetic.

I was given a print estimate and some formatting requirements, this meant doing some changed to how I set up my document.

Once this had been realised I checked my document over and decided on a few changes, firstly as it would be perfect bound, there needed to be more space around the edges especially in the crease, changing the whole documents margin to 12mm would be better suited to the printed style, furthermore this would effect the grid. I knew that having it professionally printed meant I needed to pay more attention to the typographic details of the magazine, changing the text to not hyphenated.

Also changing the drop caps, the use of correct drop caps is something I had not experienced before and shows how important this project has been in learning how to do correct editorial design. I went through each spread and ensured that every detail was correct and the spacing was even, as well as each spread was high quality and consistent. The spreads bellow show the finalised document ready for print, the level of quality is greatly improved and overall technical level of design has been changed for the better.

Magazine Redesign - Commissioning Illustrations

As part of the editorial designs I have commissioned three editorial illustrations.

These three illustrators all offer something very different, and I have picked the subject matters based on their own styles, and content they would enjoy working on.

It is really valuable to utilise the skill sets of these illustrators and be able to produce things I would not be able to do on my own. This gives a more light hearted and exciting publication, more inline with the indie mags typically seen in places like Village & MagCulture.

These 'Women with Attitude' spreads have been illustrated by Charlotte Bowie. The content of this article is slightly difficult to digest, and using these much more interesting images has give it a different dimension.

This portrait by Kieran Blakey of Zaha Hadid. Is a possible cover design the really playful techniques combined with interesting and detail texture makes it stand out therefore a perfect mag cover.

Finally I asked Annie Merrick, a student I have collaborated with previously to draw an illustration for an article about the Williams tennis playing sisters.

Allowing for illustration to be right at the heart of the work ensures the magazine looks very different to previous and gives it a more contemporary and current aesthetic.

End of year Publication - Postcard design

The back of the postcard designs have been designed for their simplicity and allowing the content to be the focus. Using the same 'logo' BAGD from the die cut cover for added consistency. The use of a QR code allows for more digital work to be represented through the connection to a website or video.

End of year Publication - Refined Publication spreads

Once the overall concept had been realised and we had won the pitch we began designing much more refined publication. Using a singular typeface of 'franklin gothic' to give the design a modernity and simplistic style.
