Initial sketches and designs

I began my initial designs by looking at the different categories of species to try and sort out the different animals on display at the Tropical World in to categories this would then allow me to start making more consistent and recognisable designs for each different room and animals on display. I could the consider matching each with colours to make the designs as recognisable as possible. For example Aquarium and Sea life - Blue and represented with a fish symbol, Reptiles - Green and represented with a Snake.

I then made a loose sketch of the layout of the park this would allow me to better understand how you might move through the park and how you would experience the signage and what would be the next thing you would see.

Doing this loose sketch showed me ruffly the overview of the signage and what different signs I would need around the park. I found out the park is one large loop through each room and back on itself full circle at the end. Considering this my designs my follow this large loop and inform the viewer of what is being shown and what is around the next corner.
I created these initial sketches of all the different animals I photographed within the park and tried to capture what they look like in a loose and minimal way using as little amount of detail yet making the recognizable. Doing this would allow me to create digital pictograms for each animal with ease.

As the Meerkat is something that is very popular within the park and something they are very proud of displaying and mention a lot on their website and in their advertising I feel this is an important part of this project and I have to bring this into my design. These drawings I feel don't represent the Meerkats very effectively and I am going to redraw them as the feel a little disproportionate and rushed. Creating these sketches forms a great basis for my next designs to better understand what animal might best represent each part of the Tropical world.
