OUGD503 - Responsive - Penguin Books

John Squire's Penguin Book covers representing the best novels of the 50's, 60's, 70s and 80s. Article by Creative Review.

The covers hand made approach makes for more individual cover. The art style is tactile and works against what could be seen as current book cover designs that often are completely made on computer software.

This hand made approach could be a possible way of setting designs apart. Hand draw/painted typography is something that I have wanted to explore and experiment with for sometime now, this brief being so open gives an opportunity to explore this.
This image shows how the design if done in Indesign would be very standard, but the hand painted effect transforms this work into something engaging and different.
The cover for Hawksmoor by Peter Ackroyd the theme of creating extra depth within an cover is taken even further, the chalk board like design emphasises the tactility of this cover design. The choice of type has been selected for its anonymous and universal values, putting all emphasis on the skill of the painted workings.
