OUGD504 - Design for Screen - Only Studio

Only Studio
Designing for Screen Talk.

Working with mainly Non-Profit, Education and Luxury brands.
Only studio felt it wasn't important for a designer when working on screen format design that they don't have to know code, and that only an understanding of the limitations of code is needed. They stated that if you explain your idea enough to the developer there shouldn't be any issues. They also explained how if a designer can show that he has the capabilities to understand what is needed for design for screen that this would put you in a much better position to be employed.

In terms of that next level of engagement with on-screen designs, they explained that making the work interactive, have a personality and really tells a story. They also stated that there are misconceptions with screen design but it can be exciting and the possibilities are endless. Within their practice they also consider when appropriate the digital brand first the translate this to print. As well as always trying to impliment an extra level of emotion and feeling into their work.

Goldsmiths
Part of the talk they explained some of their project, the work for Goldsmiths University related to the themes of the Art Map brief. They explained how the design had to work for both mature and international students so it had to be clear and easy to use, as well as remaining in line with the art school style of the college. They explained that striking this balance within their work between these two themes was key. There work for the project seemed to fit within this idea, part of the designs breaking out of the standard grid is a way of creating this artistic engagement. As screen design works across a range of platforms they explained that they are one of the only studios that do all their work across four formats to ensure the same communication throughout.

After the talk there was an opportunity for questions, the first I asked was... Do you feel screen limits how playful design can be? Considering readability and functionality?

Answer :  It depends on both the brief and the target audience, the limitations can often be what defines the work and using these limitations to the designers advantage. Limitations often lead to opportunities to see what is needed and build upon this. Design solutions should optimize the format of the design. Target audience they stated is key, it defines the overall content delivery.

The second question... Do you find not having a developer creates any problems with production?

Answer: Don't take no for an answer, if they can't do what your thinking then get someone else. They explained they had really talented developers that work on their project from Poland and Amsterdam and they are yet to have any problems, creating small mock ups for the developer in after effects outlines the idea much clearer. If the concept is clear it should be okay.

This talk was very useful in understanding more about a field of design is pretty new, ways of working, what to avoid and what works well.
