Selecting four designs to refine.

Looking closely at my twenty designs I feel confident of these four being my strongest to move forward within this project. I have chosen these because of the rich variety each design is completely different and can be influenced by similar designs out of the twenty that I feel were somewhat successful. Analysing why I have selected each one and what I can do moving forward and considerations for each.

Design number 4. This design I felt would give me some great opportunities to get my hands dirty, looking at the abstraction of space and line along side some more intimate and personal text would create a design that is a bit different therefor setting it out from the rest. I would love to experiment with some hand painted serif type on top of my more ambiguous background.  Within the context of secret 7 I think that this much more ornate and hand made design may rescind with the judges more yet to be created how I would like it to will take a lot of time and effort. This design is defiantly directly influenced by the work of ECM records and how they might put together a much more enigmatic design that reflects the ambiguity of the music.

Design number 13. With this design I had not thought about the idea at all until I began creating some sketches I think the dynamic and eye-catching masks would make for a alluring and interesting design that will leave the viewer wanting to know more. I feel this design will defiantly need much more further research and development looking at as many different cultures as possible to find the most appropriate. I felt this design was another opportunity to create something captivating and that will appeal to a larger audience. As the masks are so incredibly graphic and show exceptional use line, colour and emotion that it would make a perfect fit for a enticing record cover design. This process really shows the importance of creating a range of ideas as I feel confident with this idea and I would never have come across it without this extended level of idea generation. Within this design I feel that looking at detailed collage, possibly paint or just line drawing will bode for more exciting results within this project I feel it will be beneficial to me not using the computer as much as possible.

Design number 15. This idea is a formulation of a couple of ideas (15, 9 and 17) all with this underlining them of surrealism and the subconscious. As surrealism is such a hot bed for creativity I felt that continuing to look into this style of art will create some compelling work. I am in particular interested in this idea of creating a dream scape much like the paintings of Salvador Dali. This elephant with extended legs I see as a real icon of his work and creates this brilliant combination of the observed and the recognisable. With this idea I think the attention to detail within choice and application of materials is very important and will be key to the overall aesthetics. I am going to also experiment with a number of different designs related to surrealism, I want to look at using the extended horizon that seems to disappear into the distance. This idea I feel looks at this idea of dreams compared to the rest of the designs.

Design number 20. This idea will again be a combination of a couple of ideas (1, 8 and 20) all looking at the composition of simplistic shape as the focus, this has been implemented in many extremely intriguing album covers over the years. This idea is very different from the others as it is more conceptual this will construct a refreshing change in my designs and form a valuable alternative to my other designs. With this design it is important to consider the minor details of size and composition. The application of type within this design I feel should be subtle and not forbearing I will again implement some of the design techniques concerning type that ECM records has used in the past as that is more sophisticated and illusive. These four designs give me a great starting point with this project and can be changed and adapted as my work continues.

As these are my four more finalised ideas I am going to label them idea 1, 2 ,3 and 4 in the order they are currently shown from top to bottom so when referring back in my research I have a reference point.
