Design ideas
Leaflet Design Ideas from analysis of the government videos on roads and travel safety.
Idea 1. Taking the Grandmaster Flash inspired video 'Close To The Edge' and using the lyrics as the main text content, trying to replicate the same kinda of funky 90's style hip hop from the video.
Idea 2. 'Stop Listen Think' displayed in large and immediate uppercase type to grab the viewers attention then on the inside some information on how dangerous car accidents can be using statistics and info-graphics.
Idea 3. Using some of the commonly seen road signs and ways of crossing the road in an abstract mismatch of imagery to communicate to the viewer how important paying full attention to these things must be.
Idea 4. A play on the book and film 'The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy' using the guide itself to explain the importance of road safety on planet earth. Creating a publication that looks like the guide seen in the films and as described in the book.
Idea 5. Much more illustration based leaflet showing what to look out for when crossing the road. Directed more for kids and young people. Making sure the illustrations are intriguing and as engaging as possible.
Idea 6. Using photography in conjunction with text to communicate dangers of the road and how to avoid them best. The content laid out in a gridded, minimal and direct fashion so the information is seen with ease.
Idea 7. Using shocking statistics and facts in large and clear type compared to the rest of the information that would typically be on a government leaflet to put an emphasis on the dangers of the road and why it is a concern for everyone.
Idea 8. Using a evil and scary looking car illustration to grab the viewers attention and show that there is a real danger with car accidents. Accompanied with a text and information advising them how to take more care.
Idea 9. Creating an illustration of a road that has fallen away showing how the streets have been taken over by cars and that the pedestrian has much less space and priority.
Idea 10. Using statistic about how many people their are in the world along side how many cars showing how car accidents are one of the highest causes of death in the world a year.
Idea 11. Using the 'THINK' ad campaign for road safety showing a person not looking the right way and about to be hit by a car. Creating a large full page photo or illustration to catch the readers eye.
Idea 12. Creating a large full page info-graphic on where car deaths happen most frequently in a year. Trying to engage the viewer on the enormity for the problem.
Looking at my twelve ideas I think idea number 4 would create engaging and informative content that for fans of the books or films would enjoy but additionally could be designed in a graphic and playful manor. I also think idea number 5 a much more illustrative and personal feeling leaflet design would grab the attention of the viewer and be something they might want to look at which is never really the case for a government leaflet. I think idea number 12 would draw the viewers attention in as they would want to know what it is kills this many people a year world wide.
I have decided I want to look at the Douglas Adams book The Hitchhikers's Guide to the Galaxy and how the book communicates its information. Especially in the 2005 film directed by Garth Jennings. In this film the guide itself is shown in a digital format that shows information on various subjects around the galaxy. The style of graphics is very particular and has a fantastic use of colour and typography to communicate very effectively in a lighthearted and concise manor. The title for this book could be something like " The hitchhikers guide to.. crossing the road safely on Earth!" analysing the aesthetics of the different videos and the tone of voice will be the perfect starting point for this project.
