The Refugee Nation has created a flag that can be used to to symbolise refugees. The design has been inspired by the orange and black life jackets worn by the people that have been forced to leave their countries. The design was created by a refugee -
The flag of the Refugee Nation was designed by the artist Yara Said, a Syrian refugee who found asylum in Amsterdam.
"Black and orange is a symbol of solidarity with all these brave souls that had to wear life- vests to cross the sea to look for safety in a new country. Since I had wear one, I have a personal engagement with these life-vests, and these two colors"
- Yara Said
The really graphic nature of the design is extremely appropriate to the strong message it is conveying, this work can in the future inspire the practical work associated with refugees.
Though the design is really appropriate I would question the creation of the flag and whether it is slightly patronizings to have a flag designed. As I have not been a refugee or experience the troubles they go through it is hard to say. But a consciousness of this issue is vital if I am to put a message out their about the refugees.
