OUGD504 - Type In Context - Overlooked: the art of the humble manhole cover

Creative Review released this article on the Pentagram book projects 'Overlooked' On the manhole covers of London. This project links with my own photographs and the way they have been collected. The theme of the book is highlighting the shapes and forms of something often overlooked in this case a manhole cover. Looking at the extraordinary in the ordinary is a theme I wanted to explore in my own project. The way this publication has been designed and put together really relates perfectly to the content and concept.

Each individual manhole is the focus of the publication, the design is very simple shows the prints of the manhole covers as the overriding content. The typography giving a bit of context to each is very small and placed right on the left and right hand side, this takes nothing away from the quality of the images.

The Book features some context in how the images have been collected and printed. This further explanation gives the reader an idea of the process and makes the images even more intriguing. The way the manhole covers have been made more engaging with the use of bright colours brings out the differences in size and scale. The book has been printed very large to give an better impression of the scale and to work with the large screen prints. The size is very appropriate to the target audience and the context of the publication. This book is an excellent example of when the design has been fully informed by the concept. This is what I am to do in my project firstly I need to identify what it is my target audience wants to see.
