OUGD504 - Type In Context - Statement and Counter Statement
Statement and Counter Statement by Experimental Jetset.
I have been reading this book recently and I am totally amazed at the quality of the production. The first thing I noticed was the size, it is small in size and hand held but there is a thickness to it, the book feel substantial and easy to hold. The choice of matt stock for the cover is totally appropriate to the book giving it a tactile feel. This is an example of a book that is in a way a coffee table book as it is an artifact in itself and the reader can show it off. I have often seen Instagram images of this book on a fancy looking coffee table alongside other acclaimed art and design books. Hopefully with my book there is a similar tactility and sense of intrigue to the viewer. The type is mainly Helvetica (classic Experimental Jetset) this means the information is easy to read and communicated clearly and directly. One thing that really stood out for me in this book is the binding, it has been bound with great care, each page is able to lay flat and there is no problem reading text near the margin, this again is something so useful and user friendly. The information has been broken down into sections which include a body of text followed by a collection of images. This is a layout style seen in the London Letters article in Eye magazine. It means the is a distinct split in the book and allows the reader to view both the images and descriptions on there own if needed. There is also limitations with this, the reader has to constantly flick back and forth between the pages this can become tiresome and frustrating. My design using tip in half page inserts hopefully will allow the images to be read with and without the descriptions simultaneously.
As this book in an excellent example of contemporary graphic design that reaches a large audience of designers and creatives the way it has been designed can help inform my own designs.
