OUGD505 - Design Practice 2 - Product Range Distribution - Photography/Art Books Research - Experimental Jetset

Following on from this focus on white space and a simplistic minimal and stripped back design I have began to look at the work of the Dutch design studio Experimental Jetset. Inspired by the late dutch modernist of Wim Crowell & the total design dream their approach to designing is totally unique and has underlying principles in modernism. Letting the content do the talking. This seems to often be a focus in the delivery of content.

Whitney Identity's approach to white space is unique using a simple W as the main identity the rest of the work is moulded towards this, The way the images sit in these spaces shows an appreciation for letting the work become the focus. They talk about with exhibition branding they feel it is important the view knows it is part of an exhibition and not a separate thing all together.

Book Design.. This approach to modernism is seen within their editorial designs, The use of Helvetica is typical of the studio and is always used to up an emphasis on clarity, this clarity remains throughout all of thier designs. Clarity of content makes for clarity of communication. This 'international' style is contemporary but also shows a way of looking to the past in terms of modernist theory.

In terms of imagery the principles of these book designs is the same yet uses back ground colours create a different hierarchy of information. The bold graphic type again ensures communication is clear and apparent.
This book shows again the 'typical' Experimental Jetset style using images as type as the focus. This appreciation of white space allows the communication to be central. These design ideas put forward by Experimental Jetset would be great to incorporate into the designs for the borders book.
