Magazine Redesign - Research - DOMUS
DOMUS is an Italian architectural magazine, that is probably the best designed magazine over the last few years. The libary resource has a massive collection of old and current issues.
There has been massive change in the magazines design yet the quality is always there.
The layouts spreads are all really beautifully put together, the variety of image sizes and the connection to the collums works brilliantly.
The more recent covers always feature a coloured cover and illustration of some kind. The spreads are all very dynamic and the use of text and image really gel together.
This yellow cover shows again the coloured designs and how they become really recognisable through this.
The use of type on this full bleed image is really consisded and shows how architectural magazines can be designed.
The dark blue cover is another of the coloured designs that adds to a collection of others. The white header in the coloured type is interesting and uses the space really well.
I love the lime green of this cover design, again connecting to the overall designs. The illustration is always really simple though this could be expanded on.
The use of half pages gives an interesting break to the content. Using half pages could be a way of making the spread more alluring.
These coloured covers when in a large collection like this look great alongside eachother.
This connection between each cover is something to consider and can be utilised in my own redesign of an architectural magazine.
The older issues, are very different and there is much more image lead, I like how the logotype uses a red box around the type, this is something a little different. These covers are very different to the current issues and I feel personal it more interesting. The illustrations used on the previous are very plain and could be improved with more direct communication.
Once again the spreads are really high impact and the design reflects the architectural content on show.
This kind of dynamsism is the level I aim to achive in the redesign I willbe undertaking.
