TYPEFACE & SCREEN PRINT - Typeface Research

As part of PPP & EP I have decided to create a custom typeface for use on a poster, trying to demonstrate my skills in typography, image making and print making. The screen print aspect make each poster much more exciting and personal.

I have been a big fan of Geometric typefaces from my COP 3 research. The work of Jan Tschichold and his Architype typeface as well as Avenir Next, Futura, Bayer Universal, Avant Garde and Geometric 23. The geometric nature of these typefaces make them slightly easier to design by really modern and intriging.

The process of designing includes drawing out a grid for the X height and Baseline this creates much more consitancy within each letter.

I wanted to create a thin typeface at first and continue the shapes in larger weights.

As you can see the typeface is almost a mix of many typefaces shown above just with my favourite elements in each the Q for example uses the horzontial line bellow. Much like the Avenir Next.

The shape of each letter needed not to be compromised in the thicker letters, it needed to enhace each. The overall typeface displayed the quality and level of detail I had planned for.

As the typeface is Geometric writing on the poster GEOMETRIC TYPOGRAPHY in cap would display this connection. As the poster is more of an art piece it was important to come up with some interesting yet not dominating copy.
