Magazine Redesign - Research - Architectural Review Current Issue

The current issue of Architectural Review. The Women in architecture issue. The use of really high impact photography is what sets this magazine apart. This tone of voice is consistent throughout the mag allowing the content to be the focus.

I love the use of coloured pages throughout. They really break away from the traditional white pages seen in architecture magazines.

The use of serif type gives an aura of class that runs throughout the design of the mag. Though this contents page is simple there was an opportunity to make it more dynamic and show some of the content.
In contrast to the serif type previously the use of this bold sans-serif acts as headings for each of the pages. This is continued across two spreads in the publication, allowing for a visual consistency.
How the magazine flows from page to page is just as important as how it is communicated in one page.

I feel there is, however, a missed opportunity in the magazine's connection to architecture, I fell there could be more of a correlation to architectural design and magazine design.

These more playful pages make for a more interesting read and relate to the tennis theme of the article.

The magazine again jumps back to the use of serif type there is little consistency in this design and it would be better to see either the combination or just one.

This kind of spread I would say is very fashionable in editorial design at the moment. The large san serif black type that stretches the length of the page could be seen in so many other magazines. In my own design, I aim to move away from this and at least approach it in a more creative way.

Once again something really important in the editorial design for this magazine allowing the photography to be the focus. Large full bleed images archives this.

Something I would always seek in these magazines is the architectural illustrations. These beautifully detailed drawings really show the skill of the architect and give a great insight into how the building will look. This combined with the coloured pages allows for a really interesting couple of spreads.

I think it is nice to see some photography that shows some of the details in the architecture. Rather than just formal images of the structure. Overall the design of this magazine is really well done, I do feel I could bring something new to it but I will have to think about a redesign is worth it.
