What is a book?

What is a book?

Book's written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers'

I think a book is much more than a collection of printed pages due to the rise of the digital age where most of the information we see on a day to day is online the book has taken a back seat in terms of content, However I feel this had made for books and publications  being much more personal and intermate. Not any old thing can be published anymore so books become much more precious and the content must me much more thought out.

In terms of different types of publication it all depends on content. Magazines are an indepth yet concise overview of a specific subject or theme, Leaflets are a brief overview into one very specific area and books are extremely in depth and refined looks at a specific subject in great detail. These different platforms of publication allow an artist, author and designer to express their opinions and knowledge of a subject to an audience.

I have found eight different examples of publication design that I personally like due to there layout, use of colour and attention to detail.

As shown from left to right

Derriere Le Miror, 2G Mies van der Rohe Casas Houses, Than Hussien Clark, Liminal Spaces Jurek Wajdowicz.

SuperGraphics, Architectural Journal 1984, De Kooning Painting, Cuentos Completos Roberto Arlt.

I have chosen these eight designs due to their overall graphical feel and simplistic yet immerse design. Each design excluding the 'Than Hussien Clark' cover uses bright and strong colours whether that is in the main image or in the corresponding typography. This bright and eye catching use of colour along side minimal and simplistic typography is an aspect of graphic design I feel creates a invoking and versatile design. I love the abstraction of the 'Liminal Spaces Jurek Wajdowicz' the image is blurred and creates this sense of mystery and wonder within the design. The 'Derriere Le Miror' is one of my favorite magazines due to the fact each cover has been created by an artist for the magazine. There is a real sense of a unique and intermate feeling to this magazine I would like to look in more depth at the 'Derriere Le Miror' in my research for the Design Principles Project.
