Design Practice 2.
The learning outcomes for the module highlight the areas that will need to be explored. As explained in the briefing the module is much more all-encompassing, therefore it is important to try and incorporate everything previously learnt in terms production and professionalism.
There is an emphasis on the awareness of the social, cultural, ethical and commercial roles of graphic design. These topics need to be realised in terms of both my own and other designer practice as well as their effects on the communication, function and delivery.
Another of the learning outcomes is the development of professional presentation/communication skills. This will need to be evidenced through quality final solutions, photography of the final solutions, professional design boards and finally in presentations.
This part of the presentation highlights the need for the designs to not only show skills but how you apply them. This is an area that I began to explore in the last studio brief but could definitely improve. This brief allows an exploration into me as a designer, what I think design should and shouldn't be. Expressing these ideas and principles through my own work.
Another slide that seemed useful to analyse - Highlighting the different processes that will take place throughout the module, these will all in turn shape and change the project. All of which will need to be documented.
- Formed of two studio briefs:
Studio Brief 01 - Leeds Public Spaces
Research events and happenings that have occurred in Leeds and helped shape the city; then choose one that will become the focus for an A3 traditional print that celebrates this event. Organised r impromptu but it must be celebratory.
Presented as A3 print must use only traditional print methods. The prints will be exhibited in the level 4/5 exhibition in May.
- Aims/Brief interpretation.
This brief gives a great opportunity to explore the contexts of Leeds, and tying these in with my own interests, things like architectural spaces, political protests, culture and the arts, music and transport. Linking back to the original themes of social, cultural, ethical and commercial roles of graphic design.
The print needs to be made traditionally using at least or not limited to - screen printing, letter-press, foiling, em/debossing, mono-printing as well as other techniques. This means the final print must be akin and appropriate to these processes. This project is also a useful opportunity to try and push my print making skills further.
Studio Brief 02 - Product Range Distribution
Examine graphic design outputs relating to social, political and ethical change. Aim to increase your awareness of historical examples plus contemporary practice that is responsive to 21st Century issues. Be sure to note the interrelationships between medium, message and distribution. You should then produce a body of research work that explores the connections between these concepts and their respective design outcomes prior to your own practical and conceptual exploration of possible products, ranges and methods of distribution that may be suggested by your preferred content or, indeed, those that reflect your own ideologies, concerns and/or ambitions.
This overall description of the module seems very long and complex so rewriting it in more simple terms will help to gain an understanding of what is being asked.
- Produce a body of research in relation to social, political and ethical change and graphic designs role within it, in response to 21st Century issues. Explore the relationship between medium, message and distribution relating to a specifically identified issue I feel strongly about.
- Create a body of practical work that shows my knowledge of the issue, tap into the market potential for socially, politically and ethically-driven design. Delivered in the form of a issue led campaign.

This project will further push my voice as a designer in the contexts of real world professional design. As with any project I hope to push my skills, learn new things, test my abilities and create my most exciting work yet. Over the last few briefs I have learnt to try and love all projects and push my ideas as far as possible.
