As Leeds is the context of this brief it seems useful to reflect on my time so far living in the city. This will then naturally form topics for investigation for my A3 celebratory poster on uses of public space.
- Leeds market and corn exchange. - Both with a lot of history and show some of the traditions of Leeds, possibly picking up on the food festivals, market events and other events of this nature.
- Leeds Sporting achievements - Leeds United has a rich footballing history winning the first division in 1991/92 season. The club parade around the city centre could be a possible topic for further research. The Leeds Rhinos have ha alot of success in recent years. Headingley Cricket Ground hosts many international cricket games over the year.
- Leeds Music Scene - There have been a number of really iconic bands/artists to play in Leeds. Music could be an interesting focus for this brief. The Dutchess of York venue was host to a number of famous bands including Nirvana, Radiohead, Coldplay, Pulp and Oasis. Roundhay Park is another iconic venue of Leeds and hosted many bands in the 80's especially like - The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson to name a couple. Finally in terms of music events, The Who played at University of Leeds Union. Music can be really influential in shaping the culture of a city so possible solutions into this could be interesting.
- Protests, Marches.
The recent anti Trump marches taking place on the Headrow, this is a current issue that I feel personally strongly about, and could be a thought provoking issue. The Women's March Protest. Protests against the Syrian War. With these very political issues there is an emphasis on the design having a continuousness of what it is communicating, this would need to be considered further in exploration.
-Festivals/Carnivals
Leeds West Indian Carnival - the longest running Caribbean carnival in Europe that is celebrating its 50th year this year. Another very interesting topic that could have many different solutions.
Transport/Travel
Leeds Trams- Leeds used to have many electric trams as well a large canal system this could be a possible topic for exploration as it deals with many issues regarding, society, culture as well as transport.
Leeds Architecture -Leeds city hall is an example of a building built for the people of a city, it has served as the venue to many events over the last 100 years including concerts, festivals, as well as remaining the working city hall for Leeds city council.
The brutalist architecture of Leeds has been very influential in the north, this is another area of possible interest in this project.
The brutalist architecture of Leeds has been very influential in the north, this is another area of possible interest in this project.
The Asian community of Leeds - There is such a large Asian community in Leeds that I feel is under represented and this could inform a possible solution.
Overall these topics are all starting off points and will need further research and the ideas and themes will change as the project continues.
