OUGD505 - Leeds Public Spaces - Further Research of ideas. - Idea 4 - Leeds West Indian Carnival

Idea 4. Leeds West Indian Carnival - Europe's oldest Caribbean carnival, celebrating its 50th year in 2017. Really bright imagery is a contrast to the other ideas, a lot of colour, using some of the imagery from previous years, trying to tap into the Caribbean culture and the imagery associated with it.

Currently the imagery, posters, and photographs of the carnival are bright, fun and the graphics are slightly jarring and over the top almost, however this aesthetic is appropriate to the topic but could be done in a more subtle way. Overall there is a amazing wealth of imagery that could be used, the really punchy photography would lend itself perfectly to a two or three colour screen print. This idea is much more bright in contrast to the others this would be great for bright and impacting screen prints, it is useful to have a contrast to the other ideas. There is also the added bonus of it being the 50th anniversary, this could be another possible way of creating an interesting solution.

Top Left - Using the fact it is the 50th anniversary of the carnival, showing the '50th' in large impacting type then showing a range of images charting the history of the carnival from then to now. - large type bright colours reflecting the Caribbean carnival style.

Top right - A large half toned image of the amazing carnival dresses on show, Bright two colour screen print of the costume alongside bold woodblock type.

Bottom left - Using some of the imagery associated with the carnival, creating a real poster for the 2017 anniversary carnival. Using the real information, logos, colours in a more contemporary and graphic style.

Bottom right - Again using the bright costumes on show at the carnival and creating a drawn image from this reflecting the playful fun theme of the event.

This idea has much more room for bright graphics but would need much more extensive research into 'carnival' and Caribbean styling.
