OUGD505 - Leeds Public Spaces - Further Research of ideas. - Idea 1 - LIVE AT LEEDS

Idea 1. Live at Leeds- The Who. A poster celebrating the iconic album by The Who performed at Leeds University Union in 1970. Thought to be one of the best live recordings of all time. The poster would aim to capture the rock/punk aesthetic of the band. Using some of the photos taken from the concert. Tapping into the influence a band like The Who had on the Leeds music culture. Celebrating one of the most poignant concerts in Leeds music history.

Imagery -

Really high impact photography from the concert. The black and white imagery would lend itself to half tone screen printed imagery. The images would work alongside graphic type similar to the use of typography of most of the albums of The Who.

Really bold use of type shown throughout the bands branding. A true rock and roll classic. The iconic branding has been really influential on many music albums. The poster could look at the Mod movement and everything that associated with it.

There is an emphasis on the British Mod subculture, the imagery associated with the mod's are graphic bold, great use of shape. Many collage cut outs. The work of of Peter Blake is something I have always loved, and reflects the mod styling.

Culturally, looks at the Mod subculture, and reflects on the dying art of the classic British rock band. Analysing the influence of The Who's album on the music scene of Leeds.

In terms of society - looking at the subcultures of northern England.

Possible outcomes for The Who - Live at Leeds.

Top left. Using some of the iconic images of the gig, created in a half tone, alongside the 'The Who, Live at Leeds' stamp taken from the album. Really impactful strong imagery. Two colour screen print.

Top right. Inspired by Sir Peter Blake's illustrative work showing some graphic symbols relating to the mod movement. Then bellow in large block type the words ' The Who - Live at Leeds, 1970.'

Bottom left. Using the union jack with the classic 'The Who' logo type. Again really bold, clear and very graphic imagery associated with The Who and Rock music of the time.

Bottom right. Using one of the black and white images taken at the concert showing more of the crowd and the building showing off the fact its at the University building.

Overall this concept has many different areas to explore and would produce some interesting and thoughtful explorations. It is important within this idea to capture the 'mod' aesthetics and try and find out more about the imagery associated with it and the overall style.
