End of module Evaluation

This module included four briefs, Secret 7, Licence to print money, Collaborative Exhibition Branding and Speaking from experience. Each being very different allowed me to explore a very wide range of design approaches and styles. The briefs have really pushed my practice in terms of informed research, time management and continues design decisions I feel all my responses to the individual briefs have taught me different things.

I found with Secret 7 I had the opportunity to be much more ambiguous in my work and the designs didn’t need to be as type orientated and I could express a more art based style. For this brief I worked totally analogue and didn’t use a computer till I scanned my final designs, this was an amazing change and something I would really recommend. It pushed me to create new and varying designs and I could show my skills in drawing and collage. Responding to a live brief was something I have never done before and I was really ready for the challenge I wanted to have my designs included, though this didn’t happen I would try again as record cover designs was a area of design that I had no real prior interest in but I now have a new found appreciation for this field in graphic design. This project also opened my eyes to creating a large range of ideas my mask outcome was a result of really pushing my designs and creating as my ideas as possible.

With the licence to print money exhibition I found myself becoming more and more obsessed my money design. I found so many interesting design features in the notes I had no idea were there. This project I would also say has been my most in-depth in terms of research. I looked at so many different examples of currency design before even thinking about my own designs, this meant naturally my concepts and ideas were much more refined and had further research to back them up. Printing is something I have experimented with a few times on foundation but I never got the chance to screen print before this project and I feel in love with it straight away. I could take drawings, digital designs and photographs and print them to totally transform the designs was amazing. This is something I want to continue with into the second year and see how I can really push my designs. The money brief overall I feel is my best piece of design work to date and I was clear in my reasoning behind design decisions.

In studio brief three there was the opportunity to work as a group, I was a little hesitant at first about this but I found working with a team a challenging but enjoyable experience. It opened my eyes to how much a group could achieve and quickly. Ideas came up that I would have never had thought of on my own and the group were great in pushing my practice. Our work in the project seemed to really click towards the end of the project and the consistency between our designs became much more evident. I was very pleased to be short listed into the final four groups and hope our group can move forward to win!

In the final brief studio brief four I was able to reflect on my year and think about how much I have improved as a designer, my knowledge of type and grids at the forefront of this in my designs. I feel I identified an area of great interest for first years and was proud of the final design I created. I found with this brief my writing changed somewhat and I was much more concise in my design documentation.

Overall this module has been very challenging but I feel I was up for the challenge and I have been able to mange my time effectively and create some interesting and engaging outcomes. Moving into second year I feel how I go about projects had improved and I can be much more effective in documentation of my work. Feedback is a theme that is vital in design throughout this project I have received critique from my tutors and peers. What I find most useful is having constant discussions with friends on work, this constant dialect means we have great knowledge of each other work and how we could suggest improvements. As this feedback is almost all the time it is difficult to evidence and this is something I could really improve on.

Speaking from experience Evaluation

My aims an ambitions for this project initially was to create something different form what I had previously worked on in this module. Looking back on my first few weeks in of first year has made me realise how much I have come along interms of application and knowledge of graphic design. I was initially unsure on what my favourite typeface was because I didn’t know enough I now am unsure because I like so many! In this project more than any I have done I have really leant to be concise in my language and design decisions, in briefs I would initially look to explain everything I was doing but I have began to add much more reasoning behind these decisions. This project I felt I identified a theme that would really resonate with first year students and related to my experience of the course I had very little knowledge of design studios but wanted to know more. Instagram being so popular and a great way of seeing new things this project would encourage the students to surround themselves with graphic design imagery and see a range of different examples of style and techniques through out the year and not just at one point. The word follow seems to sum this up they would continue to follow these designers after they had seen the publication.

If I was to make any improvements in my work I think the print quality could have possibly been improved along with some more in-depth research. I am however very pleased with how engaging and appropriate my designs were they related importantly to my time in first year and showcased some of the new design skills I have learnt. One thing that I think makes this design particularly unique is the use of both online and digital formats this encourages a wider audience and can be read by anyone.

Navigation

In this full screen view it is much easier to navigate through the coloured pages, this was something I didn't want to be lost in the online version.

Follow? on Issuu.

Digital format

As this piece of work is a printed piece of work but with a theme on online content I felt it would be appropriate to create an online version this could then be shared through social media if that is the prefered format for the auidence, as most of the content we see on a day to day basis is online printing my designs in this format seemed a must. How the print translates to online would be interesting to see and if there is many changes within this.

Printing the Follow? Publication

During this project I printed out my publication a number of times to make sure the consistency and flow from page to page was as I wanted it. This image shows the ridiculous amount of times I printed my booklet. I really struggled with getting the print finish right, the page order as it was not a multiple of 12 wouldn't paginate and the designs then needed two additional blank pages. On top of this I had problems with cutting out my designs. When I got the page order right I printed my designs but when cutting the cutter slipped and was not at all aligned.

I subsequently changed my designs to work when printed without any cutting needed, this would if reproducing my work be much less time consuming.

Binding was another part of the designs I struggled with the binding shown here is not on the edge of the page and this effects the readability of the cover.

These images show my final designs, when printed double sided and centered the image still wasn't in line and as you can see here the pink from another page shows through. I tested this many many times but the prints wouldn't work in line, this is something I would definitely improve upon if I could, this takes away from the consistency of the whole publication. For this design I am however very pleased with the binding. The binding worked directly down the middle and the overall finish was excellent.

Exhibition Evaluation

In this brief there was a real opportunity to work as a team of people that you might not usually work with, this can sometimes be challenging with the contrast in opinions and style our team however really worked together. Using each of the different skills we had to work alongside each other. Our designs initially were very limited and way too over the top, I found after the group critique with the four remaining teams our ideas started to come together with much more conviction and seemed to relate much more appropriately to the theme. The consistency across all our design was clear and we worked much better together in working to one theme.

This project for me shows the importance of looking closely at the content, and how the designs can reflect this, it is even more important in exhibition branding. Our original designs did not in any way explore the theme of an analogue printing process and seemed in a way to be distracting from the work. This however is very different to final ideas the theme is much more distinctive and clear. This shows the importance of really analysing the content if we had looked closer at what defines the exhibition and how this be could reflected in our graphics.

In this project my work should have reflected my research more distinctly, there was no clear links to this and could have been very useful in making the designs more professional.

I am pleased overall with the level of effort and time put into this project and I feel I made some significant contributions to our groups work.

Final presentation images

Our final presentation images, With an emphasis on cosistency and clarity this would be the final image we would present to the fisrt direct team. Showing all aspects of our new identity and explaining how we would carry out the exhibition if chosen.

Refined spreads.

Using six distinctive colours I have created cateogies for each of the sections, using a banner across the top means when printed it is easy to navigate around this and refer back to the contents page as any time. With the choice of colours I wanted each to be distinctive from eachother and be bold yet using similar light tones but remaining punchy bright and enagaging.

Defining Categories

To refine this design I wanted to categorize the designs further these are my new catergoies for each of the instagrams. This would improve readability and nagivation across the whole publication.

Deaign Associations
Aigadesign, Boooooom, Its nice that, colours may vary and graphialely

Type
Tdfoundary, typegang, goodtype, Handlettering co.

Uk Studios
Dnco, Sociodesign, todaystudios, twotimeselliot

International Studios
Formaandco, nodeberlinoslo, speachstudio, Dia , hawlinservies, heystudi, jetet_experimental, kolnst.

Independant Designers
yassenfauk, kate moross, Newrafeal, olleeksell, Vincefrost, xpatrickthimas, kulachek, Jessica Wlash

Editorial
Picklesmagazine, slantedpublishers, ligature_ch

These catogoies needed to be clear yet all the designs must remain consistant throughout. Designing the publicaiton in this way would be more of a challenge but something I felt to be much more engaging and apporpriate.

Layout so far...

These images show my layout of designs, the emphasis on simplistic communication, putting the emphasis into the content. Displaying as effectively as possible the different designers to follow for first year students. Speaking to my tutors we agreed the designers needed some more further content or refinement, I suggested defining each section into categories to make the designs easier to navigate and show the varying range of different companies , studios, associations and collectives, this would make the designs more engaging and give me another level of detail for my content. I have additionally alphabetized the order to insure maximum clarity, this is also reflected in the back covers order to emphasis clarity.
