Money Design and History - DesignBoom

This article on DesignBoom.com, written by Ridhika Naidoo in 2009, talks about money production as an art form, how money has changed and evolved over the years and the relationship money can have in the creative world.

Talking about the power of money in relation to different people and all of this coming from what is a essentially a piece of paper.

This notion of money being an abstract measurement and an idea is very interesting and could prompt a lot of very though provoking ideas in terms of the money of the future. I would like my design however to be a little more literal and have more of a clear and distinct meaning.

The work of Hana von Goeler is fascinating, the way she treats money as platform of convoying a message is brilliant.

I love these two designs using the American Dollar and highlighting a issue that America has had a lot of influence in being the Syrian and Iraq boarder. The idea of using a banknote of a country to relate them to the issues being highlighted is very clever and impacting.

The other piece is more subtle but I think is brilliant, just highlighting various graphical parts of a very iconic design to really emphasis the detail and intricacy of the design.

This piece is title Mad Art by J.S.G Boggs, the image resembles greatly  american bank note but obviously orange and with many many strange and wonderful alterations. The images are so detailed that the money appears real and could be from some kind of pretend place. The level of detail in this work is incredible and would be a great marker for how detailed and complex my bank note could be!

This work by Aaron Kobin is an example of a interactive video piece where the artist asked 10,000 different people all to draw a computerised section of the bank not and this would the come together to form one note.

This idea of using a digital format that can be interacted with and moved is amazing and totally innovative. This project however the outcomes must be created in annaloge printing methods so this would not be appropriate. Nevertheless the idea is brilliant and something I would never had through to do.

These two designs are examples of the amazing complexity of colour and shape seen in bank notes that are really beautiful and can be seen definitely as pieces of art. The craftsmanship and skill on show is amazing, the different colour combinations that come together in a great harmony and would really lend themselves to being screen printed.
This article has been really interesting and insightful in terms of seeing money design as more of an art form and opening my eyes to the different possibilities in format and techniques that can be used in the making of money.
