These images show the way finding for the Barbican center in London. The type is a bold Futura this reflects the Brutalist architecture of the Barbican. All the type is generally very large and often in a 3d format. There is a real emphasis on the numbers of the type being using throughout the identity way finding and branding, The use of three main colours makes the designs very consistent throughout and it is clear when which is for the Barbican. The design is very impacting due to its scale. The unique form is something that is not typically seen identity design. The wrap around way finding reflects the Brutalist architecture as the holes show the brick work coming through. This design is extremely impacting and consistent die to the connection with the Brutalist architecture this is an appropriate starting point in my research.
These images above show the identity way finding and signage for the people history museum, show me the money exhibition. The use of large type is not unlike the type for the Barbican, the large type is engaging and impacting. This large type is something I feel we should look to use in our designs making in impact is something I group highlighted as important for this project. One this I would say for these design the type is in no way consistent. There is a range of type from the signage to the posters to the way finding and body copy of the exhibition. This impacts the identity of the exhibition and remains less memorable. These images show very different examples of how the Exhibitions identity has been applied to a range of formats and mediums.
These images show the summary of the KAWS exhibition at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. All professional exhibitions uses a really consistent type set paragraph explaining the exhibition. Usually printed in a adhesive vinyl this is a design feature we as a group need to think about.
The Hepworths use of signage , typography and creating a really graphic considered consistent identity is brilliant. The type is very personal to the exhibition and reflecting the intricate details of the building and sculptures on show. The whole identity seems to reflect the building and its content. The type's consistent used throughout every single piece of collateral for the exhibition. The poster that uses the pink back ground with DID YOU KNOW? written large is a really engaging change that keeps with the same style and use of type. With each of the pieces of information on each thing exhibited the type is again consistent. I do however thing that the use of paper with plastic covers for the information isn't very effective and would look much better simply stuck to the wall in a card stock.
These images for the Royal Academy show the Painting the modern garden exhibition. The design uses a large consistent type with RA representing the Royal academy, this is seen though out all the designs and on the magazine, leaflets, posters every thin to do with the royal academy. The consistency in type size and positioning means the designs can use a range of colours and remain distinctive and visible throughout. The graphics hierarchy of information means the 'Painting the Modern Garden' stands out but so does the back ground image and the large RA. The use of large flag banners for the exhibition is a real icon of the royal academy and feels extremely consistent throughout. This is an excellent example of the consistency used to show the branding an identity of this work.
The Tate identity.
These images show the identity, branding and way finding for the Tate, the designs are clear and distinct but the use of rounded edges on the typeface means the designs remain family friendly and a bit more playful. The types consistency is of course very coincided and consistent throughout, there is a real range of type sizes used though out and this adds to the underlining theme of a artistic playful gallery.
The use of colour is something that is eye catching but has a real subtlety to it. The designs can use expressive colours as the type is always the same and doesn't move away from this. The communication of imagery is all very coincided and not over bearing this really reflects the interesting content of the exhibition.
Looking at a lot of examples of primary research in this project will help me realize what exhibition design looks like in the real world nd how this can be applied to our designs. Using the colorful styles in our designs is something we highlighted early on. For me I feel making sure the design is subtle is important I don't want our design to be overpowering and distracting from the work.
